Amman:Motorists whose vehicles do not pass the upcoming winter safety checks will have one week to repair any defects without facing immediate traffic citations. This initiative is part of a nationwide roadworthiness campaign launched by the Public Security Directorate (PSD).
According to Jordan News Agency, field inspections will commence next Sunday under the "More Roadworthy Vehicles, Safer Roads" campaign. The effort is aimed at identifying mechanical and safety issues before the onset of harsh winter weather, which poses increased risks on the roads.
The inspections will be conducted by traffic departments and the Royal Department for Environment Protection, with support from specialized technical teams from the Maintenance Department. Inspectors will issue notices to motorists with vehicles that have defects affecting safe operation, allowing them seven days to make necessary repairs and comply with safety standards.
The focus of the inspections will be on equipment crucial for winter driving, such as tires, lights, windows, windshield wipers, and engine fluids. Public transport vehicles will also have their heating systems checked, along with any other defects that might compromise roadworthiness.
The PSD has established rapid drive-through inspection lanes at traffic departments across Amman and the governorates, as well as at driver and vehicle licensing centers and their evening stations. Government service centers will also provide technical vehicle inspection services.
The PSD stated that the initiative aims to prevent accidents by identifying faults early, rather than relying solely on enforcement after violations occur. They encouraged motorists to proactively inspect and service their vehicles before winter conditions set in, noting that preventive maintenance can reduce breakdowns and accidents, thereby protecting drivers, passengers, and other road users.
Companies, institutions, and fleet operators are invited to participate by ensuring their vehicles meet technical safety requirements. Media outlets were urged to promote preventive maintenance and vehicle safety awareness. The PSD emphasized that the campaign is part of a broader national road-safety effort, treating vehicle readiness as a year-round responsibility rather than just a seasonal requirement.
