Amman: Public Security Directorate (PSD) on Sunday inaugurated the new headquarters of the Correctional and Rehabilitation Centers Training and Development Institute, built in cooperation with the European Union and the German International Cooperation (GIZ) Office.
According to Jordan News Agency, the facility is a strategic step that enhances the capabilities of the facility’s workforce and keeps pace with developments in the security and rehabilitation fields. Inaugurated by PSD Director, Maj. Gen. Dr. Obaidallah Maaytah, the ceremony was attended by the EU Ambassador to Jordan, Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, and GIZ Director Jordan, Dr. Lorenz Petersen.
During the ceremony, Maaytah stated that this achievement represents a shift in the PSD’s reform system and embodies its commitment to developing training infrastructure and raising efficiency of its personnel, which would impact the quality of services provided to inmates and consolidate standards of justice and human rights.
Maaytah noted that this EU-supported project is an extension of a strategic partnership, aimed at strengthening the capabilities of Jordan’s security institutions and incorporating modern concepts in the management of rehabilitation-centered correctional facilities, in accordance with the latest local and international standards.
Meanwhile, the EU ambassador valued cooperation with the PSD, adding that the establishment of this Center reflects a humanitarian and correctional policy to provide inmates with the tools for personal growth through education, vocational training, and psychological support to empower them to rebuild their lives after their prison terms.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Director of GIZ Office said the partnership with the PSD embodies a model of bilateral cooperation in the rehabilitation field, which aims to support the directorate’s efforts to promote human rights standards and improve the correctional and rehabilitation environment.
Petersen noted that this partnership comes within the framework of the German government’s commitment to supporting security and correctional institutions in Jordan within a sustainable and comprehensive approach.
The inauguration featured a tour of the facility, where guests also viewed an exhibition of inmates’ products, which came in collaboration with GIZ’s continuous partnerships to support community integration efforts and achieve sustainable human development.
