PM Mourns Passing of Statesman and Former Prime Minister Ahmad Obeidat

Amman: Prime Minister Jafar Hassan issued a statement of profound condolence following the passing of former Prime Minister Ahmad Obeidat on Monday evening.

According to Jordan News Agency, the Prime Minister reflected on Obeidat's life, highlighting his dedication to the Hashemite leadership and the Jordanian people. Obeidat was described as a towering figure within the political establishment, known for serving the nation with unwavering integrity during its most formative chapters.

Born in 1938 in Hartha, Irbid, Ahmad Obeidat's career was marked by his rise to the highest levels of government and security. He served as Prime Minister and Minister of Defense from 1984 to 1985, following his tenure as Minister of Interior from 1982 to 1984, and Director of the General Intelligence Directorate.

Obeidat's legislative expertise was further demonstrated through multiple terms in the Senate. His international standing was also recognized, as he served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Program.

A pivotal architect of Jordan's modern civil and judicial frameworks, Obeidat presided over the Royal Commission for Drafting the National Charter between 1990 and 1991. He also held vice-presidential roles on the Royal Commissions for Human Rights and Judicial Development in 2000.

From 2003 to 2008, he was at the helm of the Board of Trustees of the National Center for Human Rights. Obeidat was a recipient of the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Renaissance (Wisam al-Nahda), First Class, and his legacy remains a cornerstone of the Kingdom's commitment to public service and institutional reform.
