PM, Iraqi parliament speaker discuss ties

Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh on Tuesday received Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed Al Halbousi and an accompanying delegation.

The premier stressed the “historical and strategic ties” between Jordan and Iraq, adding that Jordan is committed to enhancing cooperation under the trilateral agreement with Iraq and Egypt and expressing the Kingdom’s willingness to promptly carry out joint projects, including a border economic city and the Basrah-Aqaba oil pipeline.

Khasawneh reiterated Jordan’s solidarity with Iraq to bolster stability, defeat extremists and terrorists and support Iraqi government institutions.

“Whatever happens to Iraq, whether good or bad, reflects on the entire region. We aspire that Iraq regains its vital role in the Arab region and the world,” he added.

For his part, Halbousi reaffirmed the Iraqi parliament’s commitment to advancing and bolstering relations with Jordan, pledging to support agreements signed under the Jordan-Iraq-Egypt cooperation mechanism that will “positively” reflect on the three countries.

He also lauded Jordan’s efforts to rally regional and international support to Iraq and its institutions.
