Philippines floods death toll rises to 44

Amman, The number of victims of heavy rains and floods in the Philippines has risen to 44, according to the government’s Disaster Management Department.

At least 28 people are still missing, Xinhua reported on Friday, citing official figures cited by the Philippine National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in its updated report.

The statistics issued by the Council indicated that 35 people died in the southern Philippines, while the number of victims reached 6 in the Bicol region of the main island of Luzon. Three others were killed in the central Philippines.

The floods have forced the government to relocate more than 500,000 people in 9 districts across the Southeast Asian country.

The Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, mainly due to its location in the Pacific Ring of Fire and Typhoon Belt.

On average, the country experiences 20 typhoons annually, some of which severe and destructive.
