Petra Marks 56 Years of Trusted Journalism and National Service

Amman: On Wednesday, the Jordan News Agency (Petra) marks its 56th anniversary since its founding on July 16, 1969, reaffirming its longstanding commitment to the Journalistic Code of Honor, professional standards, and the principle of responsible freedom.

According to Jordan News Agency, for over five and a half decades, Petra has remained steadfast, even in the most challenging circumstances, in championing national causes as well as those of the Arab and Islamic worlds and, more broadly, the cause of humanity wherever it may be found.

Evoking the wonder of Petra, the rose-red city rooted in antiquity, the agency stands as a success story woven by generations of dedicated journalists and administrators who have shaped its legacy as Jordan’s official source for accurate, reliable, and credible news.

On this occasion, Minister of Government Communication and government spokesperson Mohammad Momani congratulated the Petra team on its anniversary, commending their national efforts and significant contributions to advancing Jordan’s media mission. He extended his best wishes for the agency’s continued professional excellence.

He said Petra, a living witness to the nation’s achievements, remains firmly committed to its mission of serving the homeland, its Hashemite leadership, and the causes of the Arab and Islamic nations, foremost among them the Palestinian cause.

Momani highlighted Petra’s distinguished team of media professionals recognized both in Jordan and across the Arab world. The agency remains present at all major events, documenting national, regional, and international developments in words and images and providing the public with up-to-date, reliable coverage.

He added that Petra’s media presence places great responsibility on the agency to redouble its efforts in delivering accurate news and images while actively confronting misinformation. Petra, he said, stands as a compass for professional journalism and a trusted source of credible reporting.

As it marks its anniversary, Petra is working to launch a revamped website designed to deliver live news updates, reports, features, and photo coverage from its network of correspondents both inside and outside the kingdom.

Recently, Petra’s Board of Directors approved its Strategic Plan for 2026-2028, outlining an ambitious development roadmap aligned with the demands of the information revolution and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies, particularly artificial intelligence.

The agency is also preparing to unveil a historical archive titled “Petra Memory,” featuring a curated collection of photographs captured by its photographers over decades of Jordan’s modern history, along with a display of vintage equipment and tools used since the agency’s inception.
