Amman: The Lower House of Parliament's Energy and Mineral Resources Committee participated in a dialogue session organized by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, focusing on the economic, environmental, social, and governance dimensions of hydrogen project development in Jordan.
According to Jordan News Agency, Chairperson Ayman Abu Hanieh emphasized the promising potential of hydrogen projects to enhance energy security and support economic growth. He highlighted the urgency of completing the legislative and regulatory framework to create a conducive investment climate and clearly define institutional roles.
Abu Hanieh also noted the importance of aligning hydrogen initiatives with national energy strategies and implementing them through defined, time-bound action plans. This approach aims to optimize resource utilization and position Jordan as a regional hub for clean energy.
He further pointed out the significance of the new gas law in stabilizing the energy sector. The legislation establishes a comprehensive legal framework for gas and clean energy investments, clarifying rights and obligations while streamlining licensing and regulatory procedures. This, he stated, enhances the competitiveness of the Jordanian market for both domestic and regional investors.
Committee members Khader Bani Khaled, Jamal Qamouh, Iman Abbasi, Naseem Abadi, and Rakin Abu Hanieh advocated for a comprehensive approach to hydrogen development. They discussed the need to address investment prospects, environmental safeguards, social returns, and governance mechanisms to ensure sustainable implementation. Additionally, they considered mechanisms to strengthen community engagement and institutional coordination in line with national priorities.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh stated that the development of the green hydrogen sector is progressing within established institutional frameworks and in accordance with the national energy strategy. He mentioned ongoing technical studies to assess water requirements and operational needs, alongside the completion of legal procedures for the involved companies.
