Amman: The Lower House's Foreign Affairs Committee engaged in discussions with Greek Ambassador to Jordan Irene Riga on Monday, focusing on enhancing cooperation and addressing regional issues of mutual interest.
According to Jordan News Agency, the committee's chair, MP Haitham Ziadin, emphasized the longstanding relations between Jordan and Greece. He highlighted Jordan's significant role in managing the challenges posed by successive waves of refugees, which have strained national infrastructure and resources. Ziadin also stressed the importance of Greece's support for His Majesty King Abdullah II's positions on various matters, including the Hashemite custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and efforts to cease aggression on Gaza. He pointed to the European Union's backing of Jordan.
Committee members echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the need to bolster cooperation across all fields and acknowledging Greece's cultural and historical contributions. Ambassador Riga reiterated the significance of the Hashemite Custodianship over Jerusalem's holy sites and expressed Greece's support for His Majesty the King's stance on regional issues.
The ambassador recognized Jordan as a voice of moderation in the region and a strategic partner of the European Union. She praised Jordan's handling of the refugee situation and announced Greece's commitment to aid in Gaza's reconstruction, commending Jordanian efforts to end the conflict.
