Phnom penh: One civilian lost their life and three others sustained injuries in a cross-border clash between Thailand and Cambodia on Wednesday, as both nations traded blame following the recent suspension of a peace pact by Thailand.
According to Anadolu Agency, Cambodia’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning what it described as “unprovoked shooting by Thai forces” against Cambodian civilians in Prey Chan village, Banteay Meanchey province. This incident, the statement said, was a serious violation of Cambodia’s sovereignty and a breach of international humanitarian law.
Cambodia responded by evacuating hundreds of residents from the affected area, as confirmed by provincial spokesman Norng Vuthy. Meanwhile, the Royal Thai Army refuted the claims of unprovoked aggression, asserting that Cambodian soldiers initiated the attack by firing into Thai territory. The army stated on Facebook that Thai forces responded with necessary force to protect sovereignty and personnel.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul commented on the situation, indicating he would manage diplomatic communications with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim regarding the suspended commitments. The Thai Foreign Ministry is preparing correspondence to clarify matters with the Trump administration, which had witnessed the peace pact last month in Kuala Lumpur.
The escalation follows earlier tensions, including the wounding of four Thai soldiers in a landmine explosion. In response to the ongoing situation, China has urged both countries to exercise restraint and find a peaceful resolution. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian expressed hopes for a mutually acceptable solution to prevent further escalation.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also engaged in diplomatic efforts, emphasizing the need for strengthened friendship and ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand. Anwar communicated with Cambodian and Thai leaders, advocating for stability and lasting peace in the region.
