Next Baghdad conference to be held in Egypt: Jordan FM

Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi Tuesday said the Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership in its second session was held to reiterate the centrality of Iraq and support its stability and that Iraq’s victory over terrorism is a “victory for all.”

Safadi said the conference reiterated support for Iraq, its security, stability and sovereignty, adding that Iraq’s stability is a “pillar” of regional security and stability.

During a joint conference with Iraq’s foreign minister, he said, “We in Jordan have a firm position in building institutional cooperation mechanisms with Iraq that would achieve mutual benefit. We are one, and our economy will magnify its achievements if we work together.”

He referred to the cooperation mechanism linking Jordan, Iraq and Egypt. The mechanism, he added, has made “many achievements” at institutionalising cooperation and working towards achieving integration, noting that the next summit will be in Egypt.

Safadi praised President Emmanuel Macron’s support for the first Baghdad Conference and the second conference to assist Iraq by highlighting Iraq’s security and stability’s importance to the region.

He noted that Iraq achieved a victory over terrorism through “great sacrifices, and this victory belongs to all of us,” adding that terrorism is an “enemy to all.”

The Iraqi Foreign Affairs Minister, Fouad Hussein, thanked Jordan for its support, adding that countries of the region need to be together to tackle challenges and ensure prosperity.

Hussein said the Iraqi government’s challenges are regional and international, noting that the environmental, climatic, security, economic, energy, and food and drug security challenges require joint action.

He noted that the electrical connection between Jordan, Iraq and Egypt is in an “advanced” stage, highlighting the importance of cooperation for the project’s success.
