NARC implements farmer-driven training in Ghor Safi region on improving tomato cultivation

The National Agricultural Research Center (NARC), on Wednesday implemented farmer field schools (FFS), in cooperation with Ghor Al Safi Agricultural Research Station, targeting tomato crop cultivation.

This project came within the Rural Economic Growth and Employment Project (REGEP 2,” implemented by the Jordan Enterprise for Economic Development (JEDCO), and funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), according to a NARC statement.

The project coordinator, Mohammad Abu Hammour, stressed the FFS’s importance to provide farmers with new skills, and train them on “useful” agricultural practices and applications that will develop Jordan’s agricultural sector and achieve sustainable development.

Meanwhile, Head of Ghor Al-Safi Agricultural Research Station, Wissam Nawaisah, said FFSs will be a nucleus for research, development and dissemination of scientific research outcomes, by carrying out “entrepreneurial” projects implemented by NARC, in stations and research centers countrywide.

The project facilitators, Haditha Dalain and Rania Khalafir, lauded the extent of the FFS’s “participatory” cooperation, which targeted 33 farmers in the southern Jordan Valley, on agricultural operations related to tomato crop cultivation, disease and pest prevention and control methods, and post-harvest operations, in addition to preparing tomato manufacturing FFSs.
