Ministry to Form Committee to Boost Tourism Projects in Jerash

Jerash: Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Imad Hijazin announced the formation of a committee to review and enhance tourism projects in Jerash, aiming to significantly develop the area’s tourism sector. The announcement was made during a meeting held at the governor’s office, where Hijazin emphasized the ministry’s dedication to the region’s tourism, highlighting the need for collaboration among various stakeholders to bridge the modern and ancient parts of Jerash.

According to Jordan News Agency, Hijazin outlined plans to enrich the tourism offerings through a new tourist trail connecting the modern and ancient cities and the rehabilitation of Hashemite Square. He acknowledged the local community’s integral role in crafting and implementing the tourism development plan. He also stressed the importance of improving the overall visitor experience, from the handicrafts market to archaeological site routes and services for visitors with disabilities.

Emphasizing the ministry’s focus on cultural tourism, Hijazin noted the priority given to training and marketing efforts for Jerash residents to attract tourists interested in the city’s rich history and heritage. The goal is to establish Jerash as a prominent destination on the global tourism map.

Governor Malek Khreisat introduced the “Jerash is Unique with Its People Well” initiative, aiming to foster collaboration between government bodies and the local community. This initiative seeks to address citizens’ needs, enhance public services, and drive sector development through specialized teams tasked with addressing reported issues within a week.

Mohammad Bani Yassin, head of the Jerash Greater Municipality Committee, discussed major municipal projects, including a JD1.8 million Italian-funded venture to connect the modern and ancient cities. Plans are underway to illuminate the archaeological site in partnership with the tourism ministry, showcasing Jerash’s cultural and historical significance.

Municipality development unit head Wafa Hawamdeh detailed strategies to link the ancient and modern cities and boost tourism revenue, while entrepreneur Hazem Al-Ayasrah proposed a project to light up the city at night, encouraging longer visitor stays and stimulating the local economy.

Following the discussions, Minister Hijazin, along with the governor, municipal officials, and Director-General of the Department of Antiquities Fawzi Abu Danna, toured several tourist sites in the governorate, further solidifying the commitment to Jerash’s tourism development.
