Minister: Jordan Enhanced Sustainable Water Resources Despite Growing Pressure

Amman: Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abu Al-Saud stated on Saturday that despite increasing pressure on water resources, Jordan has made significant progress globally in achieving the sixth Sustainable Development Goal, which focuses on the sustainable management of water resources and ensuring access to safe water and sanitation for all by 2030.

According to Jordan News Agency, in an interview with Petra on World Water Day, Abu Al-Saud emphasized that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development includes a commitment to systematic monitoring and review of progress toward these goals, utilizing relevant global indicators. Jordan is implementing these plans through well-thought-out strategies, focusing on integrated approaches to conserve water and achieve water security. This includes efforts such as desalination, reuse of treated water in irrigation, construction of dams, water harvesting projects, and groundwater management.

Abu Al-Saud highlighted that World Water Day serves as an opportunity to reaffirm and implement the royal designation letter to the government and to showcase His Majesty King Abdullah II’s keen interest in the water sector, which holds strategic importance for food security. Emphasizing the need to expedite strategic projects, he pointed out the national water carrier project, which aims to provide 300 million cubic meters of water annually and includes measures to reduce water loss and prevent attacks on water pipelines.

The government has recently launched the National Water Strategy for 2023-2040, which outlines goals and plans to achieve water security and sustainability in response to population growth and urban and economic expansion. Additionally, in collaboration with international organizations, the water ministry is promoting modern agricultural techniques, such as hydroponics, which require less water than traditional methods. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to encourage innovation and utilize modern technological solutions to ensure optimal use of water resources, contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals and leveraging renewable energy.

On World Water Day, celebrated on March 22 to emphasize the importance of water and inspire action to address global water crises, Jordan remains committed to the sustainability of its water resources, acknowledging the crucial role of water as a fundamental resource for sustainable development.
