Meeting tackles industrial wastewater hazards

Amman: A meeting was held on Monday to discuss ways to limit industrial wastewater’s negative impact on desalination plants spread throughout the Kingdom.

Held at the Water Authority of Jordan, the meeting was attended by representatives of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), ministries of environment, health, and local administration, and local water companies.

The gathering tackled the harmful effect of industrial wastewater on the quality, characteristics, and units of wastewater treatment, as it contains high amounts of suspended solids.

Assistant Secretary-General for Sanitation Affairs at the authority Wael Duwairi pointed out that disposing of industrial wastewater in sewage drains can take its toll on desalination plants, therefore reducing the quality of treated water and raising maintenance and operation costs.

He urged the need to designate a landfill for industrial wastewater in cooperation with the local administration ministry.

During the meeting, participants emphasized the need for relevant ministries to double their efforts to ensure that industrial wastewater is not randomly disposed of in undesignated places.
