MADABA: The Directorate of Antiquities of Madaba Governorate has announced the successful maintenance and rehabilitation of three key archaeological sites in the central governorate in 2024, aiming to boost tourism. Abdullah Buwarid, the Director of Madaba Antiquities, shared this development, highlighting the department’s commitment to preserving the governorate’s rich archaeological and historical heritage.
According to Jordan News Agency, Buwarid emphasized that the rehabilitation efforts targeted Madaba, Ma’in, and Makawir Castle, in collaboration with the local provincial council. The initial project focused on conserving the “Tall Madaba” archaeological site by reconstructing three stone arches from the Ottoman period, now serving as a notable architectural feature for tourists. Restoration work also included maintaining and restoring the site’s mosaic floors, which were discovered during previous excavations.
A significant addition to the conservation efforts was the construction of a special warehou
se aimed at safeguarding newly discovered treasures from environmental damage, ensuring their preservation for future generations. In Ma’in, multiple archaeological sites underwent rehabilitation, positioning them as emerging attractions on the tourist map of Madaba. The Western Parish and its heritage house in Ma’in were specifically targeted for restoration and are expected to welcome visitors soon.
Buwarid highlighted the initiative’s positive impact on the local community, noting that it has provided employment opportunities to help reduce unemployment in the area. The project also included documenting, cleaning, and restoring Byzantine-era parish landmarks. The third project involved the rehabilitation of the historic Makawir Castle, a project initiated following a Royal visit to the site in 2023.
