Maaytah, Australian envoy talk electoral cooperation

Amman: Chairman of Independent Election Commission (IEC), Mousa Maaytah, on Sunday discussed with Australian Ambassador to Jordan, Bernard Lynch, ways to enhance joint cooperation regarding the electoral process.

According to an IEC statement, Maaytah reviewed the commissions’ achievements at the regional level, and its keenness to “institutionalize” relations with all partners.

He also said a number of Jordan’s political parties worked to rectify their status, adding that party financing will be set according to elections results and seats each party wins in Jordan’s Parliament.

Maaytah added that the Kingdom’s vision aims to empower women and youth and enhance their participation in the electoral process and involvement in parties, by bolstering their role in the election and party laws.

IEC also recently launched a women’s empowerment unit, which is tasked with developing their participation in Jordan’s political life and their access to decision-making positions, he pointed out.

For his part, Lynch lauded “remarkable” development of IEC’s work and its management of Jordan’s electoral process, its openness to partners and efforts to benefit from global expertise in this regard.

The diplomat said these IEC’s steps would reflect “positively” on Jordan’s democratic reform, expressing his country’s readiness to cooperate with IEC in the elections field, which would improve the Kingdom’s electoral process.
