Amman: Acting Speaker of the Lower House Dr. Khamis Atiyeh announced the House's endorsement of national initiatives aimed at shielding children and adolescents from harmful digital content, emphasizing the promotion of a secure and responsible online environment in the face of rapidly changing digital challenges.
According to Jordan News Agency, Atiyeh made these remarks while presiding over a session of the House Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Committee, led by MP Moayad Alawneh. The session focused on tracking the progress of procedures to block dangerous e-games following the approval of a ban on pornographic websites. Discussions also included reviewing the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship's response to proposals aimed at regulating social media use among younger demographics.
Atiyeh underscored the necessity of developing legislation and oversight measures that align with technological advancements while maintaining a balance that safeguards society and upholds freedoms within the legal framework. He commended the ministry's cooperation with the committee and expressed anticipation to examine the specifics of measures undertaken to restrict minors' access to inappropriate content.
The acting speaker highlighted the critical need for coordination between the Kingdom's legislative and executive branches to devise "feasible and sustainable" solutions that bolster societal resilience, maintain community values, and enhance family and educational awareness.
MP Moayad Alawneh remarked that the committee continues to implement procedures to block dangerous e-games and monitor the enforcement of the pornographic websites ban, citing the potential threats these pose to children, families, and societal security. He noted that the committee is also exploring mechanisms to regulate children's social media use in collaboration with relevant authorities.
Alawneh emphasized that these efforts are part of a broader initiative to ensure a safe digital environment and improve social protection, aligning with Royal directives to adapt to technological advancements responsibly. MPs reiterated the call to complete procedures for blocking dangerous electronic and gambling games and establish clear regulatory frameworks for social media use by younger age groups to enhance community protection and ensure a safe digital environment.
