Lawmakers pass legislation package

Amman, The Lower House on Monday passed a legislation package, including draft laws ratifying extradition treaties between Jordan and Romania and Cyprus.

During a session chaired by Speaker Ahmad Safadi and attended by cabinet ministers, lawmakers pointed out that the draft legislation would enhance cooperation with Romania and Cyprus in combating serious crime, including organized crime, ensure criminals do not escape justice and facilitate the extradition of criminals in accordance with constitutional principles.

The agreement with Romania does not mean the extradition of a Jordanian or a Romanian citizen and their trial in the other country, but rather handing over criminals to be tried in their own country, Justice Minister Ahmad Ziadat explained.

President of the Parliamentary Legal Committee lawmaker Ghazi Thnaibat said the agreements do not mean extraditing a Jordanian citizen for trial in Romania or Cyprus for a crime he committed in either country, but asking for his extradition if he commits a crime and left Jordan.

The House also endorsed the draft law amending the Civil Status Law as referred by the Parliamentary Legal Committee before starting a debate of a draft amending the land registration fees law for the year 2022, as referred by the Parliamentary Economy and Investment Committee.
