King Abdullah II Prioritizes Water Security as National Imperative

Amman:Water security has emerged as a critical issue for Jordan, as His Majesty King Abdullah II emphasized its importance in his recent Speech from the Throne. Delivered at the opening of the third ordinary session of the 20th Parliament, the King stressed that water security is fundamental to national sovereignty and stability.

According to Jordan News Agency, King Abdullah II's speech underscored that water is no longer just a sectoral concern but a matter of national security requiring urgent, long-term strategic planning and investment. The King urged the government to continue with water security projects and develop proactive plans to protect and sustain the country's resources.

Former Minister of Water and Irrigation Hazem Al-Naser highlighted the King's declaration that there is no room for compromise on water security, emphasizing its strategic and security dimensions. He noted the importance of projects like the National Water Carrier, which aims to secure Jordan's water needs for the future.

Water expert Maysoun Al-Zoubi noted that the King's focus on water security reflects a broader political and strategic vision, positioning it as a top national priority. This approach links water security directly to national sovereignty and the ability to withstand external pressures.

Ghaida Abu Rumman, an expert in water, environment, and climate change, echoed the strategic importance of the King's message, emphasizing the need for proactive planning and the integration of water with environmental and agricultural policies. She called for accelerated implementation of projects like the National Water Carrier and increased investment in rainwater harvesting and technology to enhance water management.

The directive from King Abdullah II comes at a critical time for Jordan, one of the world's most water-scarce countries, as it faces challenges from climate change, population growth, and increasing demand for water resources.
