KAUST Hosts International Conference on Relevance of Microbiome Science to Space Research

Jeddah, The "Trends in Microbiome and Digital One Health" conference, with the participation of 35 international speakers, highlighted the importance of microbiome science in daily life, its capacity to address global challenges, and its relevance to space research.

The conference, organized by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) from October 30 to November 1, pinpointed the application of digital and computer tools in the process of tracking microbial epidemics, conforming with the concept of One Health, which symbolizes the cooperative efforts of the multiple sectors that work locally, nationally and globally to achieve optimal health for individuals, control epidemics, and reduce infectious diseases transmitted to humans from animals, food, and the environment.

Princess Mashael Saud Al-Shalan, a co-founder of the Aeon Strategy firm, highlighted the conference’s goal of employing digital technologies to accomplish a transformation in the health sector by accelerating biomedical research, enhancing health education, and developing precision medicine, in order to promote the concept of digital One Health in managing and preventing disease outbreaks.

SFDA Reference Laboratories executive director and co-chair of the conference Dr. Sulaiman Alajel addressed how microbial communities play a pivotal role in various fields such as health care, food production, and environmental restoration to benefit individuals and communities around the world.

Professor of Bioscience at KAUST and co-chair of the conference Alexandre Soares Rosado highlighted the conference’s role in bringing together influential international and local scientists to help stimulate microbiome science in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and demonstrate the connection of microbes to all living organisms and ecosystems on Earth from the concept of One Health.
