Amman: Secretary-General of the Ministry of Government Communication Zaid Al-Nawaisah highlighted the rapid transformations in the media and information environment, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing, understanding, and verifying information accuracy, especially during crises. His remarks came during a panel discussion titled "Professional Media in the Era of Crises and Media Literacy," organized by the Cultural Committee of the Jordan Press Association (JPA).
According to Jordan News Agency, Al-Nawaisah stressed the increasing demand for information during crises, which coincides with the rapid spread of rumors and inaccurate data. He noted that professional media is crucial for verifying and scrutinizing information, presenting it within its proper context, and that providing accurate information is a joint responsibility of the media and government. Al-Nawaisah also discussed the ministry's proactive role in addressing public concerns and promoting media literacy to build societal resilience.
Hassan Al-Momani, director of the Center for Strategic Studies at the University of Jordan, commented on the evolving role of media in politics and international relations. He emphasized that professional media serves as a source of a state's soft power, influencing international perceptions and carrying responsibility in covering major humanitarian issues.
Legal expert Mohammad Qteishat addressed the structural transformation in the media environment due to crises and social media. He highlighted the delicate balance journalists must maintain between reporting quickly and adhering to legal and ethical standards. Qteishat also discussed the legal rights and responsibilities of journalists, stressing the importance of legal awareness in protecting media work and the need to combat disinformation while respecting freedom of expression.
Faisal Basbous, moderator of the panel and head of the JPA Cultural Committee, underscored the challenges of distinguishing between accurate news and misinformation, especially during crises. He emphasized the significance of media literacy in equipping society to critically engage with media content and combat disinformation.
The panel, attended by JPA President Tareq Al-Momani and other media professionals, delved into various issues including the state of professional media during crises, media literacy, challenges posed by social media and artificial intelligence, and the legal and ethical dimensions of media coverage under exceptional circumstances.
