Amman:Major strategic infrastructure and industrial projects in Jordan are providing a crucial investment opportunity that the National Strategy for Engineering Industries (2026-2029) aims to leverage. The strategy seeks to increase the involvement of local manufacturers in meeting domestic market needs and expanding their role in supply chains.
According to Jordan News Agency, the strategy, developed by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply in collaboration with the Jordan Chamber of Industry and other stakeholders, highlights these projects as a significant source of engineering procurement. This presents Jordanian industrial facilities with a chance to enhance production and widen their customer base, contingent upon improvements in technical capacities, quality standards, and delivery schedules.
The strategy emphasizes the integration of local factories into national projects to strengthen the connections between domestic manufacturers, suppliers, and primary contractors. This integration is aimed at directing more project spending towards local production, thereby increasing the value added within the national economy.
The strategy also points out that this investment window is limited, stressing the necessity for effective mechanisms that allow Jordanian enterprises to compete for procurement contracts and turn anticipated project expenditure into concrete manufacturing opportunities.
To achieve these goals, the strategy proposes a dedicated program to boost local content in major national projects, aligning with broader industrial policy goals to deepen integration between engineering industries and other economic sectors. Jordan's engineering sector includes approximately 4,800 facilities employing around 35,200 workers directly and generated a value added of nearly JD620 million in 2024, with a total output nearing JD2 billion.
Proposed initiatives under the strategy include the establishment of an Engineering Innovation Complex in Zarqa. This complex will feature the Jordanian Center for Metal Forming Technology, an engineering training center, and a joint industrial research and development fund to enhance technical capabilities and align research and development with manufacturing needs.
On the international trade front, the strategy aims to diversify export markets by utilizing existing free trade agreements and regional geographic proximity. Jordanian engineering exports to Syria increased by 282% in 2025, reaching JD37 million, up from JD9.7 million prior to Syria's political transition in December 2024.
