Amman:United Republic of Tanzania: The Jordanian parliamentary delegation, led by First Deputy Speaker of the Lower House of Representatives Khamis Hussein Atieh, actively participated in the 153rd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The assembly brought together delegations from more than 140 member countries.
According to Jordan News Agency, Atieh took part in the IPU Governing Council meeting, where key operational matters, including memberships, draft resolutions, and elections of committees, were discussed. MP Samer Al-Azaideh, speaking at the IPU Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, called for enhanced parliamentary cooperation to build legislative frameworks that uphold human rights and democracy, emphasizing the rights of persons with disabilities and equal opportunities.
Al-Azaideh highlighted the Jordanian House of Representatives' commitment to regional and international issues, particularly the Palestinian cause. He referenced His Majesty King Abdullah II's address to the United Nations General Assembly, which underscored Jordan's positions on regional developments and the Hashemite Custodianship over holy sites in Jerusalem. Al-Azaideh stressed the importance of protecting innocent lives and enforcing international law for a just peace.
MP Arwa Al-Hajaya, addressing the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security, expressed concern over global crises testing international law. She argued for political will over force, aligning with King Abdullah II's views on conflict resolution. Al-Hajaya proposed a permanent IPU program for parliamentary diplomacy to support peace efforts, emphasizing the need for respected and enforced laws.
During discussions on terrorism, MP Ayatullah Freihat noted Jordan's early development of a counter-terrorism framework under King Abdullah II. He criticized inconsistencies in global legal standards, citing violations under Israeli occupation and the importance of equal justice for maintaining public trust in international law.
MP Noor Abu Ghoush, President of the Board of Young Parliamentarians, led discussions on youth participation and political modernization. She highlighted the need for greater youth involvement in politics, despite their low representation in parliaments worldwide. Abu Ghoush emphasized Jordan's efforts to include youth in political and economic modernization, advocating for diverse and inclusive political engagement.
