Jordan to Host High-Level Conference on Humanity in War in 2026

Jordan: Jordan is due to host the High-Level Conference on Humanity in War in the fourth quarter of 2026, according to a statement released on Thursday by the six founding states of the Global Initiative to Galvanize Political Commitment to International Humanitarian Law.

According to Jordan News Agency, His Majesty King Abdullah II and the leaders of Brazil, China, France, Kazakhstan, and South Africa, in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), have extended an invitation to leaders of all states to come together at this pivotal time. The statement emphasizes the importance of reaffirming the fundamental rules of war, which are essential for preserving shared humanity during conflicts, and insists that these rules be upheld universally, impartially, and consistently.

The Global International Humanitarian Law initiative was launched by Brazil, China, France, Jordan, Kazakhstan, and South Africa, along with the ICRC, in September 2024. This initiative emerged from a profound sense of responsibility and urgency to end brutality, human suffering, and destruction in war. To date, 99 states from various regions have formally joined the initiative.

Furthermore, 27 states are co-leading seven thematic work streams to develop practical recommendations aimed at strengthening respect for International Humanitarian Law and addressing challenges posed by contemporary evolutions of warfare. The founding member states of the initiative have urged all countries to join this effort and unite around the shared responsibility to prevent atrocities and protect humanity in times of war.
