Jordan Launches Two National Agricultural Projects with FAO

Amman: The National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have announced two national projects aimed at developing and strengthening the agricultural sector through capacity-building and expanding market access. Additionally, a project focused on the conservation and genetic improvement of local almond varieties in Jordan has been launched.

According to Jordan News Agency, NARC Director General Khaled Abu Hammour emphasized that cooperation with FAO will have a significant impact on the development of Jordan’s almond sector, which is considered a high-value agricultural crop. He noted that the genetic improvement and conservation of local almond varieties is essential for preserving and documenting the genetic diversity of almonds, which form an integral part of Jordan’s agricultural heritage. The project aims to identify, classify, and genetically analyze local almond strains while enhancing their resistance to diseases and harsh climatic conditions to ensure their sustainability for future generations.

Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mohammad Hiyari, highlighted the ministry’s collaboration with various international organizations in hosting food commodity exhibitions. These events aim to empower farmers, provide greater market opportunities, and strengthen their ability to reach local and international markets. He added that the project to enhance Jordan’s agricultural sector through capacity-building and market access will equip farmers with the necessary knowledge and skills to adopt sustainable agricultural practices. It will also foster strong partnerships between the public and private sectors, as well as international organizations working in agriculture. Furthermore, agricultural exhibitions will serve as vibrant marketplaces connecting farmers with buyers, expanding their income-generating opportunities.

FAO Representative, Nabil Assaf, emphasized that these projects mark a crucial step toward a more resilient and sustainable agricultural sector in Jordan. “FAO is committed to supporting the Jordanian government in achieving its food security goals and improving the livelihoods of rural communities. Through collaboration, we can build a stronger and more prosperous future for Jordanian agriculture,” Assaf added.

The event provided a platform for stakeholders to learn more about the projects and explore opportunities for cooperation. Both FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture reaffirmed their commitment to working together to achieve sustainable agricultural development and enhance food security in Jordan.
