Amman:Secretary-General for Technical Affairs at the Ministry of Local Administration, Mohammad Omoush, inaugurated a workshop on Wednesday to launch the "Cash for Green Services" project.
According to Jordan News Agency, this initiative is a result of collaboration between the Ministry of Local Administration and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), with backing from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
The project is designed to enhance the living conditions of vulnerable Jordanians and Syrian refugees by strengthening municipal capacities, developing solid waste management services, and promoting environmental sustainability. During the launch, Omoush stressed the importance of improving the efficiency of municipal waste management systems.
The project aims to create 4,684 temporary job opportunities across 10 municipalities, based on a "Cash for Work" model. These roles will focus on municipal waste management activities, including waste collection, segregation, and recycling, contributing to safer and more sustainable local waste management systems.
Workshop participants, including representatives from the Ministries of Labor and Health, the National Aid Fund, the Social Security Corporation, and various municipalities, discussed the technical and administrative steps needed for project implementation. They also outlined roles and responsibilities to ensure successful coordination.
The initiative emphasizes the importance of local municipalities in the implementation process, encouraging them to identify community needs and priorities while organizing and overseeing waste management efforts. Recruitment and employment processes will be managed in partnership with national institutions, with GIZ providing technical and financial support.
The project is expected to provide temporary income opportunities for the most vulnerable, while also improving public cleanliness and achieving sustainable local solutions that extend beyond the temporary employment period.
