Amman: The Judicial Institute of Jordan marked World Press Freedom Day on Sunday by affirming that a responsible and qualified press is essential to supporting the justice system and upholding the values of integrity and transparency.
According to Jordan News Agency, the Institute released a statement on its official social media channels emphasizing that the integration of the judiciary and media forms a fundamental pillar for the protection of rights and freedoms. It highlighted that while the judiciary ensures press freedoms are safeguarded from arbitrary interference, responsible media contribute to public legal awareness and strengthen citizen confidence in state institutions.
The Institute defined "responsible journalism" as a professional balance between the right to knowledge and freedom of expression on one hand and respect for the rule of law and individual privacy on the other. It emphasized the distinction between legitimate criticism, an inherent right, and hate speech or defamation, which are criminalized under Jordanian law.
Addressing modern challenges, the Institute stressed the importance of navigating rapid technological shifts. It called for the use of digital tools within professional and ethical frameworks that align with legal principles.
Over the past decade, the Institute has conducted more than 20 specialized training programs focused on publications and publishing laws, electronic crimes, and the criteria for distinguishing between freedom of expression and hate speech. These initiatives have reached over 1,000 judges, prosecutors, and media professionals.
The statement concluded that press freedom serves as a mirror reflecting a society's progress, with legal compliance acting as the primary guarantee for its protection. The Institute extended its congratulations to journalists in Jordan and worldwide, praising those committed to professional ethics and their role as a "fourth estate" in nation-building.
