Amman:Jordan has taken a significant step in promoting science diplomacy with the introduction of a new Diploma in Science Diplomacy at Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT). The announcement was made during an orientation seminar held at the Landmark Conference Centre in Amman, which brought together Jordanian and European diplomats.
According to Jordan News Agency, the seminar focused on the potential of scientific knowledge, research partnerships, and technological capabilities to enhance international relations, support evidence-based policymaking, and contribute to peace. Her Royal Highness Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the need for collaboration between scientific institutions and diplomatic services to connect science with international policy.
Princess Sumaya highlighted that scientific discovery requires policies, partnerships, and diplomatic engagement to benefit society. She underscored the role of science diplomacy in facilitating dialogue between science and government across borders. The seminar also reflected on Jordan's historical contributions to science diplomacy, including the establishment of key scientific and diplomatic institutions by HRH Prince Hassan bin Talal.
The event included sessions led by various experts, such as Dr. Jan Marco Mller from the European Commission, who discussed the European Union's approach to science diplomacy. Other speakers, like Dr. Ursula Bassler from CERN, shared insights on international research partnerships. The seminar aimed to enhance diplomats' understanding of opportunities for scientific cooperation between Jordan and European institutions.
The launch of the PSUT Diploma in Science Diplomacy is seen as a practical step towards equipping professionals to address complex international challenges. The initiative seeks to align scientific literacy, policy understanding, and diplomatic practice, fostering partnerships that connect research with public policy.
