Amman: A workshop kicked off on Tuesday to present a roadmap for climate action and decarbonization of the building sector, as part of the Jordanian-German Energy Partnership, aimed to curb carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency.
According to Jordan News Agency, Amani Azzam, Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, emphasized that decarbonizing buildings is an integral step in Jordan’s climate strategy. She highlighted that buildings account for nearly 40 percent of the Kingdom’s electricity consumption and significantly contribute to national carbon emissions. Azzam stated that Jordan aims to reduce its carbon emissions by up to 40 percent by 2030 to align with the Paris Agreement by expanding reliance on green energy.
To reach this goal, Azzam underscored the importance of collaboration, sound legislation, and specialized training, praising the current roadmap as both feasible and actionable. She described the initiative as a long-term investment for future generations, expressing hope that it would serve as a foundation for broader cooperation in the decarbonization field.
Nidal Qassem, Director of the Planning and International Cooperation Directorate at the Ministry, highlighted the workshop as a key platform to explore enhanced bilateral cooperation with Germany. He stressed the importance of improving energy efficiency for sustainability and economic growth, particularly in the face of global climate challenges.
Lina Mobaideen, Director of the Energy Efficiency and Climate Change Directorate, noted the strategic importance of energy initiatives in Jordan’s Economic Modernization Vision. She pointed out that the building sector is the largest energy consumer and carbon emitter in Jordan, presenting opportunities for impactful reforms. Mobaideen identified obstacles such as limited public awareness and high implementation costs, urging collective responsibility, especially from the private sector, to address these challenges.
Representing the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Andreas Reismann reiterated the strength of Jordan-Germany cooperation and its role in supporting decarbonization goals. He called for coordinated legal frameworks to support implementation to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.
In a recorded message, Sila Martinez Goez, Program Manager at the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), emphasized the roadmap as a tool for sharing best practices and fostering collaboration to reduce emissions. She advocated for integrating and expanding these practices across the region, citing initiatives by the German Energy Agency to establish teams focused on carbon neutrality.
