Jordan calls pan-Arab meeting to strengthen social protection

Jordan Tuesday called for a conference for Arab League countries’ social development ministers to bolster social protection and protect the most vulnerable.

The ministerial conference would pool the Arab states’ efforts in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic and draw up a joint recovery plan.

Minister of Social Development Ayman Mufleh highlighted that the COVID-19 pandemic has “hugely” impacted everyone, especially persons with disabilities, adding the region has been suffering the most from economic and social challenges due to the pandemic.

In a virtual meeting to promote the protection of persons with disabilities during crises and pandemics, Muflih said Jordan was among the first countries to sign the “Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities.”

He highlighted Jordan has approved many strategies that seek the inclusion of persons with disabilities, the latest of which was the National Strategy for De-Institutionalisation of Persons with Disabilities.

The meeting was organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA).
