Amman: Senate President Faisal Fayez and Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives Haibat Halbousi on Monday emphasized the importance of advancing the Iraqi oil pipeline project through Jordan, as well as the electricity interconnection project, citing their economic and strategic benefits for both countries.
According to Jordan News Agency, the discussions were held at Parliament and centered on strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation between Jordan and Iraq, particularly in the economic, energy, and investment sectors. Fayez highlighted the historic and deeply rooted relationship between the two nations, which is based on mutual respect and shared interests, benefiting both countries and supporting Arab causes.
Fayez reiterated Jordan's commitment, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, to furthering relations with Iraq across various sectors to achieve a sustainable strategic partnership. He underscored the significance of the Iraqi oil pipeline project through Jordan, which has been approved and would provide Iraq with a new export route to international markets, benefiting both countries amid regional developments affecting maritime shipping routes.
Halbousi, on his part, expressed appreciation for Jordan and its leadership, acknowledging the Kingdom's supportive stances toward Iraq's stability and security. His visit to Jordan, leading a parliamentary delegation that included heads of Iraqi political blocs, reflects the strong bilateral relations and the eagerness to enhance cooperation further.
Halbousi emphasized Iraq's need to diversify its oil export outlets due to challenges facing regional shipping lanes, and reiterated the strategic importance of the Basra-Aqaba oil pipeline project for both countries. He also highlighted the electricity interconnection project between Jordan and Iraq, noting Iraq's requirement to increase electricity imports from Jordan and benefit from the Kingdom's electricity surplus.
