Jordan and EU Forge Partnership to Address Cross-Border Crime and Terrorism

Amman: The Public Security Directorate (PSD) and Europol, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation, have entered into a “working arrangement” to bolster efforts in preventing and combating cross-border crime. This agreement, signed on Saturday, establishes a legal framework for collaboration and the sharing of expertise between Europol and Jordanian law enforcement agencies.

According to Jordan News Agency, the agreement targets the critical issues of migrant smuggling, drug trafficking, money laundering, and firearms smuggling. It facilitates the exchange of specialized expertise, participation in training programs, and provides advice and support in individual criminal investigations.

The arrangement stipulates that the PSD will designate a national contact point to enhance cooperation between Europol and Jordanian law enforcement agencies. It also includes the appointment of a Europol liaison officer, allowing integration into a network of liaison offices that includes law enforcement authorities from over 50 countries.

With the implementation of this arrangement, the EU and Jordan aim to strengthen their collaboration in combating cross-border crime, thereby enhancing Europol’s partnerships in the Middle East region. Catherine De Bolle, Executive Director of Europol, remarked that the signing of this arrangement marks a significant step in addressing challenges and crimes impacting the European Union, its member states, and Jordan.
