Jordan and Bulgaria Aim to Bolster Scientific and Technical Collaboration

Amman: Secretary-General of the Higher Council for Science and Technology, Mashhour Refai, held discussions with Bulgaria’s Ambassador to Jordan, Metin Kazak, focusing on enhancing scientific and technical cooperation and developing partnerships between the two nations.

According to Jordan News Agency, the meeting addressed the lavender cultivation project in the Tel Hassan area, which is being managed by the National Center for Research and Development (NCRD) with its President, Mohammad Wedyan, also in attendance. Refai emphasized the robust relationship between Jordan and Bulgaria and expressed enthusiasm for expanding collaboration between the council and Bulgarian entities with aligned goals.

He urged the initiation of strategies to advance science, technology, and innovation policies, support research and entrepreneurial activities, and promote joint projects that connect researchers from both countries. Refai also pointed out the importance of the International Conference on the Red Sea Ecosphere, hosted by the council two years ago, in tackling environmental and developmental challenges in the Red Sea region. He invited Bulgarian participation in the next edition of the conference, planned for spring 2026.

Ambassador Kazak praised the council’s initiatives, its scientific reputation, and its role in bridging the gap between industry and academia. He expressed Bulgaria’s willingness to contribute to the forthcoming Red Sea conference with experts knowledgeable about the Black Sea environment.

Wedyan shared insights into the council’s collaboration with “Wadi Al-Lavender,” the partner responsible for executing the Tel Hassan agricultural project with backing from the Bulgarian Embassy. The project aims to set up a pilot lavender cultivation site, create high-value products like essential oils, cosmetics, and medicinal herbs, and train local teams in modern farming techniques, with plans for future growth.

Both parties agreed to formulate an action plan with specified timelines, roles, and monitoring mechanisms, while also enhancing efforts to secure funding and expand cooperation areas. This initiative aims to support the national economy and generate new employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas.
