Amman:Agriculture Minister Saeb Khreisat recently met with ambassadors and diplomatic mission heads from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to discuss agricultural trade cooperation and food security. The discussions aimed at facilitating trade in agricultural and food products were held at the ministry.
According to Jordan News Agency, the meeting was chaired on the ASEAN side by Brunei Darussalam's Ambassador Noor Huda Ahmad and saw participation from the ambassadors of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. The primary focus was on increasing trade, reviewing commodity lists, and streamlining procedures to ease the movement of agricultural products between Jordan and ASEAN countries.
The dialogue also covered food security, supply chains, and strategies to diversify import and export sources, thereby minimizing exposure to global disruptions. Additionally, cooperation in agricultural investment and technology was examined, with discussions on potential joint projects in food processing, modern irrigation, and smart agriculture. The talks also included exchanges of expertise, joint training programs, and research collaboration.
Minister Khreisat highlighted that collaboration with ASEAN is integral to the ministry's plans to advance the agricultural sector, diversify supply sources, and foster innovation and food processing. Brunei's ambassador noted the opportunities Jordan presents for agricultural and investment cooperation, expressing a keen interest in translating the discussions into practical measures to enhance trade and investment.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to establish a joint working committee to review agreements and ensure the implementation of the meeting's outcomes. The attendees also agreed to organize a joint public-private business forum and reciprocal visits to explore direct investment opportunities in agricultural projects.
