Israel’s Shin Bet Chief Proposes Electronic Bracelets to Address Settler Violence

Tel aviv: Israel’s Shin Bet Director David Zini has proposed the use of electronic monitoring bracelets for extremist illegal settlers as a measure to curb the escalating violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, according to reports from Israeli media on Saturday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Zini suggested that electronic handcuffing could be employed to enforce the arrests of extremist settlers without the need for administrative arrest warrants. The proposal comes amid rising tensions and violence in the region, with neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nor Defense Minister Israel Katz having publicly addressed the issue, despite concerns from the United States about the stability of the Gaza ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

The Palestinian government’s Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission has reported that since October 2023, illegal settlers have been responsible for 7,154 attacks across the West Bank, resulting in the deaths of 33 Palestinians and the displacement of 33 communities. Furthermore, combined actions by settlers and the Israeli army have led to the deaths of at least 1,072 Palestinians and injuries to approximately 10,700 others during the same timeframe.

In a significant development last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
