Israeli prison authorities impose punitive measures after Palestinians’ escape

Tension ran high in all Israeli detention centres Tuesday amid indignation after prison authorities introduced punitive measures a day after six Palestinians serving life terms escaped from a high security jail.

For the second day in a row, the Israeli army and police have launched a manhunt after the detainees broke out of their cell by digging a hole, crawling through a cavity and tunneling beneath the outer wall of the Gilboa prison, located in northern Israel.

The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ Affairs said in a statement that the Israeli Prison Service issued restrictive measures against detainees, reducing leisure time and numbers in the yards, limiting the distribution of meals and separating Islamic Jihad detainees and transferring them to other sections or prisons.

“The prisoners will witness a dangerous wave of escalation in light of the punitive measures,” the commission warned, adding that many Islamic Jihad detainees were confined to their cells and its jailed leaders and members were being interrogated.
