Israeli occupation has no sovereignty over holy sites in Jerusalem, says house speaker

Amman, Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament Ahmed Safadi said that the Israeli government has no sovereignty over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

Opening a lower House session on Wednesday, he said the house will promptly reach out to Arab and international parliaments so that they will address their governments to “expose the occupation” and take steps that reject the illegal measures in Jerusalem.

Israel’s provocative practices and storming of the al-Aqsa Mosque are proof of its terrorism, extremism, and destruction that fuel regional conflict, Safadi said in a speech that the members of parliament agreed to be issued as an official statement, urging the intervention of the international community to stop these measure, which, he underscored are a “violation of the international law and resolutions of international legitimacy.”

He urged the halt of such provocative and unacceptable acts, which warn of further tensions in the region and undermine prospects for a political solution and comprehensive peace.

Safadi affirmed that only Jordan has sovereignty over Jerusalem’s holy sites.

Attempts to tamper with the status quo and Judaize Jerusalem provoke the feelings of billions of Muslims and Christians worldwide; therefore, the international community must stand firmly against attempts to spark a religious conflict that can affect the region and the world, Safadi warned.

He concluded by underlining Muslims’ and Christians’ historic right to Jerusalem, adding that “we will stand behind His Majesty King Abdullah II, the Custodian of holy sites in Jerusalem.”
