Accra:The Investment Ministry issued a prequalification bid call for the Mujib pumped-storage electricity project in collaboration with the private sector.
According to Jordan News Agency, the project has a capacity of 450 megawatts and offers seven hours of storage. It aims to store surplus electricity for later use, enhancing Jordan's energy security and supporting the expansion of renewable energy.
Located near the Mujib Dam, the facility will store electricity generated during the day and return it to the grid during peak evening hours. This will help stabilize the grid, increase renewable energy use, and reduce dependency on imported fuel.
The project employs a closed-loop pumped storage system, where water moves between two reservoirs through pressure pipes and two reversible generation and pumping units, each with a capacity of 225 MW. The same water is reused in the process.
The ministry anticipates "long-term" economic benefits, including improved electricity system efficiency, potential cost reductions, support for local economic development, and the use of advanced technologies and international expertise.
Developed as a public-private partnership under a build-own-operate-transfer model, the project invites qualified investors to participate in developing and operating this strategic infrastructure initiative.
