Hundreds of Tourists Evacuated from Petra Due to Flash Floods

Petra: The Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) evacuated hundreds of tourists from the ancient city of Petra on Sunday after heavy rainfall triggered flash floods in several areas of the region, in a precautionary move to ensure visitor safety.

According to Jordan News Agency, Yazan Mahadin, Commissioner of Petra Archeology Park and Tourism at the PDTRA, stated that ticket sales for site entry were suspended from midday as a safety measure. Mahadin reported that 1,785 tourists had visited the site earlier in the day, and most were evacuated by Civil Defense teams from high-traffic areas including the Al-Khazneh, the Siq, the Roman Soldier’s Tomb, the Monastery, and the slopes of Prophet Harun. Importantly, no injuries were reported.

The PDTRA emphasized that the evacuation was conducted smoothly and with the highest safety standards. The authority continues to monitor weather developments closely and has heightened its level of preparedness for any potential emergency.

Additionally, the PDTRA urged citizens and visitors to adhere to official guidelines and avoid flood paths and low-lying areas. The agency stressed that the safety of visitors and residents remains a top priority.
