Amman: The Lower House Education Committee continued discussions on Sunday regarding the draft amendment to the Jordanian Universities Law, in a meeting attended by the Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Scientific Research, Azmi Mahafzah.
According to Jordan News Agency, Committee Chairman Ibrahim Al Qaralleh emphasized the significance of the draft law, highlighting its crucial role in enhancing higher education and elevating the status of Jordanian universities. Al Qaralleh assured that the committee would review the amendments transparently to ensure alignment with both local and international educational advancements.
Al Qaralleh further stated the committee's commitment to considering a range of perspectives to craft balanced legislation aimed at bolstering university autonomy, improving administrative efficiency, and upgrading the academic and research environment. These efforts are intended to enhance the overall quality of education.
Minister Mahafzah presented the key aspects of the draft law and the reasoning behind its formulation. He explained that the proposed amendments are designed to modernize the higher education framework, enhance institutional governance, and elevate both academic and administrative performance, aligning with the country's Economic Modernization Vision to improve the global competitiveness of Jordanian universities.
The meeting featured in-depth discussions on several articles of the bill, with lawmakers questioning the impact of the amendments on public and private universities, campus development mechanisms, and scientific research advancement strategies.
Members of Parliament, including Nimer Al-Sulihat, Ibrahim Al-Hmaidi, Mohammad Al-Roud, Othman Al-Makhadmeh, Huda Al-Etoom, Ferial Bani Salman, Tamara Naseraldeen, Rania Khleifat, and Ayat Bani Issa, highlighted the necessity for modern legislation. They stressed that strengthening governance and administration is essential to maintaining education quality for the benefit of students, faculty, and administrative staff.
