House association , British envoy discuss bilateral relations

The Jordan-UK-Northern Ireland Parliamentary Friendship Association, headed by MP Mohammad Al-Saudi, on Sunday discussed with British Ambassador to Jordan, Bridget Brind, ways to enhance the bilateral relations in all fields.

Al-Saudi commended the level of bilateral relations, describing them as “distinguished and historic” in all fields and at various levels.

Al- Saudi stressed the importance of the Hashemite custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, which preserved identity of the holy city, adding that Jordan views the Palestinian cause a top priority, which was highlighted in many regional and international forums.

With regard to Jordan’s policy towards the refugees, the lawmaker said Jordan plays “a historical and humanitarian” role, by hosting a huge number of refugees.

The MP also noted Jordan is the second country worldwide in the numbers of Syrian refugees on its territory, which has put “enormous” pressure and a “heavy” burden on its limited resources and capabilities, calling on the international community to assume its legal, humanitarian and moral responsibilities towards Jordan to enable it continue its humanitarian role.

For their part, the association’s members presented visions on strengthening Jordan-UK relations in a way that would further achieve common interests in all fields.

Referring to Jordan’s reform process amid a “solid” political will in various political, social and economic fields, the lawmakers said the free trade agreement concluded between the two friendly countries would enhance economic and investment channels.

They called on the international community to support Jordan economically and financially, noting that Amman faces many challenges triggered as a result of the region’s current situation, which have become a “remarkable” pressure on its limited resources and Jordan’s budget.

In turn, the envoy praised the “advanced” reform steps that Jordan is taking in all fields.

While Jordan celebrates its centenary, the two countries are also celebrating one hundred years of joint friendship, pointing to the “strong, solid” relations in the political, economic, investment and educational fields, the diplomat said.

Lauding the role played by Jordan’s Parliament towards many regional and international issues, Brind said Britain will continue to support Jordan’s efforts to enhance security and stability in the Middle East, especially the Palestinian cause.

The envoy also said Britain will work with all its capabilities to strengthen all mutual agreements, and will also enhance its support for Jordan in many files, especially refugees and the consequences of their presence in Jordan, adding that Britain appreciates all the efforts that Jordan is making in this regard.

During the meeting, discussions went over ways to enhance parliamentary relations between the two friendly countries, which highlighted importance of continuing mutual meetings and visits to orchestrate common visions and positions on issues of mutual interest.
