Gov’t decision to slash customs duties to reflect ‘positively’ on commodity prices-AOCTC

Head of the Association of Owners of Clearance and Transport Companies (AOCTC), Daifallah Abu Aqoula, said the Cabinet’s decision to reduce fees on inspecting imported foodstuffs and reducing customs duties will reflect “positively” on the citizen and the prices of goods and services.

In a statement on Thursday, Abu Aqoula said the Cabinet’s recent decision was issued, based on a set of procedures and proposals, submitted by the AOCTC during the past weeks and months, aimed to axe fees for inspecting imported foodstuffs, slashing customs duties, increasing work efficiency and speeding up customs transactions.

The AOCTC’s proposals also aimed to susatin work round the clock at Aqaba clearance yard “4,” and reducing its handling fees, which would reflect positively on the citizen and the prices of goods and services, he said.

Abu Aqoula called on the gov’t to keep its decision unchanged on the reduction on container inspection fees, instead of extending it for three months.

In this regard, he urged the gov’t to slash handling fees by at least 50% at the Aqaba Container Port for transit goods from Arab countries.

The government’s decision also extended the exemption period for storing containers from 6 days to 14 days for a three-month period for basic commodities only, and slashing inspection fees in Aqaba container yard “4” by JD15 per container for basic materials for a three-month period, he noted.

Thus, the inspection fee for a 40-foot container now stands at JD60, instead of JD75, while tariffs for a container of a 20- feet capacity were slashed to JD50, instead of JD65, according to Abu Aqoula.
