Gov’t allows powdered milk use in dairy industry, examines possibility of importing cows

The Cabinet on Sunday decided to delegate Ministers of Industry, Trade and Supply and Agriculture to allow using powdered milk in the dairy industry, grant access to those wishing to import it from abroad for this purpose, and to examine the possibility of importing live cows.

The Cabinet’s decision comes in light of the Cooperative Society for Cattle Owners and Milk Producers intention to raise milk prices for dairy factories.

The Cabinet called for pricing the powdered milk in the dairy industry according to a different price equation of that used in prices of milk made from fresh milk, in a way that contributes to maintaining the stability of milk prices in markets, and provides this basic commodity at fair prices, during the holy month of Ramadan and beyond.

The Cabinet underlined the need to tighten control over establishments, and to take legal actions against anyone who practices monopoly or raises prices.

On a related note, Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, Youssef Shamali, decided to refer the Cooperative Society for Cattle Owners and Milk Producers to the Public Prosecutor, for violating the provisions of Article (20/c) of the provisions of the Competition Law No. (33) of 2004.
