Government Unveils Initiatives to Enhance Social Support During Ramadan

Amman: The government has introduced measures to strengthen social solidarity during the holy month of Ramadan, which this year coincides with the start of the Christian Easter fast, Minister of Government Communication, Mohammad Momani said on Saturday.

According to Jordan News Agency, in a social media post, Momani, who is also the government spokesperson, described March as a reminder of faith, tolerance, and brotherhood values that Jordan takes pride in and stressed the importance of fostering compassion and mutual support during this period.

The Ministry of Social Development has launched initiatives aimed at assisting 139,000 families during Ramadan, he said. Activities will be held at shelters for orphans, people with disabilities, and those in need of protection and care. These include communal iftar meals, competitions, and the distribution of Eid clothing to 1,373 beneficiaries.

The ministry has also completed the distribution of JD100 shopping vouchers to 60,000 families across 108 areas in the kingdom, Momani said. Meanwhile, the Jordan Armed Forces and security agencies will distribute thousands of food parcels to low-income families.

The Zakat Fund will launch a campaign to distribute 10,000 shopping coupons worth JD30 each, redeemable at military-run consumer outlets, in addition to 40,000 food parcels donated by individuals and organizations. The fund will also provide JD30 in cash assistance to orphaned families already receiving monthly aid.

On food security, Momani said the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply has taken preemptive steps to ensure price stability and maintain strategic stockpiles. These include extending incentives for private-sector food importers to store goods at state-owned silos and extending a waiver on customs duties and sales tax for sea freight charges by three months.

Authorities have also expedited customs clearance processes to keep supply chains running smoothly, with regular market inspections planned during Ramadan to curb price manipulation, he said.

In the cultural sector, the government will soon announce “Ramadan Nights 2025,” a program featuring youth activities and family-oriented evening events, Momani added. The Ministry of Culture and its branches across the country will also hold cultural events aligned with the spirit of the holy month.
