Cairo: Head of the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) Committee Yousef Shawarebeh met with the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, in the presence of Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the League, Ambassador Amjad Al-Adayleh.
According to Jordan News Agency, the meeting took place at Aboul Gheit’s office at the Arab League headquarters and coincided with the 2025 Arab Government Excellence Award ceremony, where Al-Shawarbeh was honored as Best Arab Mayor. Aboul Gheit congratulated him on this recognition, highlighting Amman’s urban organization and modern image.
Discussions during the meeting focused on joint Arab cooperation in municipal affairs and urban development. Aboul Gheit underscored the importance of fostering a culture of partnership and experience exchange among Arab cities, particularly in areas of innovation, long-term urban planning, and sustainable development.
Al-Shawarbeh praised the Arab League’s support for GAM in advancing urban planning, sustainable development, digital transformation, and smart-city initiatives. He emphasized Amman’s progress in these areas and its ongoing efforts to adapt to technological advancements impacting municipal services.
He further highlighted the necessity of expanding cooperation with sister cities to address shared challenges and promote sustainable urban development.
Following the meeting, Al-Shawarbeh visited the “Seera wa Maseera” museum exhibition at the Arab League headquarters. The exhibition commemorates 80 years of joint Arab action and displays documents, resolutions, and photographs illustrating the League’s history since its inception.
