France: Electricity delays operation of 5 nuclear reactors

Electricity de France Saturday announced that it is postponing its projects to restart five on-hold nuclear reactors, which may impose upward pressure on energy prices as winter nears.

Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported that France secures about 70 per cent of its electricity needs from 56 nuclear reactors, 30 of which are currently idle, either for routine maintenance or due to corrosion in emergency cooling systems.

AFP noted that workers in nuclear plants whose reactors were closed for maintenance went on strike today as part of broader wage problems in the French energy sector, which led to a shortage of fuel at the stations.
