Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, Yousef Shamali, announced the ministry issued more than a 1, 000 food fines countrywide in the period spanning from March 10 to April 12, of which about 400 violations were recorded since the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.
The ministry’s teams continue to intensify monitoring campaigns on the markets and take the necessary legal measures against violators, Shamali said in a press statement Wednesday.
Shamali noted market monitoring teams carried out about 27,000 visits and more than 1,500 inspection tours countrywide, during March 10- April 12.
The fines covered violations related to failing to announce prices, exceeding the price ceilings specified for a number of goods, and violating discounts instructions, he said.
The ministry also received about a 1, 000 calls, reporting market-related complaints and inquiries, which were fully addressed, he noted.
As per to the provisions of Article 13 of the Law of Industry and Trade, any merchant who sells a commodity at a price higher than the specified amount shall be punished with a fine of up to JD3,000, or by imprisonment for a period of ranging from 2-6 months, or both penalties, the minister pointed out.
The field teams, at their morning and evening tours, monitor prices and follow up on compliance with the provisions of price ceilings set for a number of commodities, including vegetable oils, fresh poultry and a number of vegetable varieties, according to Shamali.
The monitoring teams were bolstered with 500 observers, in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, in implementation of the directives of Prime Minister Dr. Bishr Khasawneh.
