FM, Swedish counterpart hold talks

Deputy Premier and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi and Swedish Foreign Minister Anne Linde held talks Tuesday on ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in various fields.

During the meeting, which was held on the sidelines of the fifth ministerial meeting of the Stockholm Initiative for Nuclear Disarmament and the Non-Proliferation Treaty, the ministers stressed the continuation of work to further enhance relations and increase cooperation in the various fields.

They also discussed regional issues, including efforts to revive the peace process and garner political and financial support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), in addition to developments in Syria and the refugee issue and support for the Iraqi government’s efforts to stabilize the country.

Safadi valued Sweden’s role as a major partner in efforts to support UNRWA, stressing the importance of joint work by the two countries to secure the necessary support to the refugee agency.

Jordan and Sweden have worked together since 2018 to mobilize financial and political support for UNRWA and have organised three international meetings, which mainly helped the agency offset the financial deficit and continue to provide vital services to Palestinian refugees in its five areas of operation under its mandate.

The two countries are also working together to find a real political horizon to kickstart serious and effective Palestinian-Israeli negotiations to achieve a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution.

In their meeting today, the two ministers agreed to continue contacts to increase bilateral cooperation and coordinate efforts to resolve regional crises.
