FM partakes in Stockholm Initiative fifth ministerial meeting

Deputy Premier and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi said Tuesday the Kingdom supports the Vienna talks aimed at reviving the nuclear agreement with Iran.

Speaking at the fifth ministerial meeting of the Stockholm Initiative for Nuclear Disarmament and the Non-Proliferation Treaty, Safadi said the issue of nuclear weapons in the Middle East needs to be approached from a wider perspective aimed at creating a region free of all weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons.

In the meeting, which was jointly held by Sweden and Germany organization in Stockholm, Safadi added that Jordan believes that the success of the Iran talks is a necessity, as failure may lead to a nuclear arms race in the region, stressing that efforts must be unified to support the goal of the region free of all weapons of mass destruction.

Besides addressing the nuclear agreement issue, Safadi noted, ending tension in the Arab Gulf region requires addressing the issue of unconventional weapons, ending Iranian interference in the Arab world and thus building relations based on the principle of good neighborliness and non-interference in internal affairs.

Safadi reaffirmed the Kingdom’s support for international efforts aimed at promoting international peace and security through the disarmament of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, pointing out that Jordan will continue to work with partners in the international community to reach a Middle East free of nuclear weapons.

He added that resolving regional conflicts and crises will significantly contribute to building an enabling environment to limit the spread of weapons of mass destruction, calling for concerted and intensified international efforts to resolve these conflicts and direct energies and efforts towards development instead of armament.

Safadi underlined Jordan’s support for all efforts aimed at ensuring compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty, stating Jordan active role and participation in these efforts.

Jordan is the only Arab member in the “Stockholm” initiative for nuclear disarmament and the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and has participated in all of its ministerial meetings.
