Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, on Monday partook in a high-level meeting on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the first conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), which was held in Belgrade.
In a taped speech, Safadi said the Kingdom is a founding member state of the NAM whose principles were inspired by the Bandung Conference in 1955 and was among the twenty-nine participating countries.
Safadi added that the NAM countries have made many achievements in promoting and maintaining international peace and security, and in expressing hopes and aspirations of nearly two-thirds of humanity over the past six decades, “however, there is a need to do more, and it can be achieved.”
“The just and lasting peace that we all seek will not be achieved unless the occupation ends and the Palestinians obtain their right to freedom and an independent state,” Safadi underlined.
He underscored that the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state, with occupied Jerusalem as its capital, on the pre-June 4, 1967 borders, on the basis of the two-state solution and in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions, is the only way to achieve peace.
He also called for finding a political horizon to relaunch serious negotiations leading to a two-state solution.
“Until this peace is achieved, it is imperative to continue providing support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to enable it to provide its vital services to about 5.7 million Palestinian refugees in accordance with its UN mandate,” Safadi noted.
Safadi said that bearing burdens of refugees is an international responsibility, and host countries and societies should not face them alone, noting that the Kingdom is the second largest country hosting refugees compared to the population.
Safadi stressed the need to intensify efforts to resolve regional crises and address their repercussions, find political solutions to the crises in Syria, Libya and Yemen, and provide support and assistance to Lebanon.
